Barbara A. Dehn, NP, Vice President of Women’s Health at Peppy Health, discusses topics presented at The Menopause Society which will help her in her practice.
Barbara A. Dehn, NP:
Hey, Michael, it's great to be here. And you know, it's 2023. And menopause is definitely having a moment, right? Everybody's talking about it. One of the highlights was hearing Susan Dominus from the New York Times, talk about her article, “Women have been misled about menopause.” And it validates what so many of us have been seeing in our practices, that women need to tell their stories, and every woman seems to need to tell that story, because we're not talking about this enough. People don't know that what they're experiencing is part of these hormonal changes. Another thing I was really interested in seeing is on lubricants because I'm all about sex and reducing friction in any type of relationship. There was a really cool randomized clinical trial that looked at when you change osmolality and pH, you get the same efficacy, the same patient satisfaction. And what was also cool was this particular study looked at the vaginal biome and there was no difference, and I think we all care about that, especially in our menopausal, perimenopausal women who are seeing some changes from GSM.
Barbara A. Dehn, NP:
In my practice, I've always been using Gabapentin for my breast cancer survivors, especially at night, and it was really good to see the non-hormonal remedy position statement from TMS that included both Gabapentin and oxybutynin. I think those are both underutilized remedies that have high efficacy that are again non-hormonal.
