Dr. Sarah Dotters-Katz is a maternal-fetal medicine specialist and obstetrician and gynecologist at Duke Health in Durham, N.C. One of her research interests is clinical infectious diseases and how they impact pregnancy.

In this video, Dr. Dotters-Katz discusses her perspective on COVID-19’s impact on pregnant patients with Senior Editor Angie DeRosa. Dotters-Katz also includes what she is seeing in her area of the United States. She has been very active in spreading her knowledge. She wrote a commentary in the April issue of Contemporary OB/GYN with Dr. Brenna Hughes, entitled, “COVID-19: The pathogen that will define the decade.”

She and Dr. Hughes also did a review recently for the American Journal of Perinatology, “Considerations for obstetric care during the COVID-19 pandemic,” in which they discussed the key points that COVID-19 severity in pregnancy is unclear and social distancing is the best protective mechanism. There is no clear evidence that vertical transmission exists. If a mother is positive, then mother/ baby separation avoids transmission. That article abstract can be found here.
