Dr Lockwood honored by SMFM

Contemporary OB/GYN’s Editor-in-Chief, Dr Charles J. Lockwood, was honored by the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 37th Annual Pregnancy Meeting in Las Vegas. SMFM President Dr Mary Norton said that Dr. Lockwood was selected “because he really has had a remarkable career.”

Contemporary OB/GYN’s Editor-in-Chief, Dr Charles J Lockwood, was honored by the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 37th Annual Pregnancy Meeting in Las Vegas. SMFM President Dr Mary Norton said that Dr. Lockwood was selected “because he really has had a remarkable career.”

The SMFM Lifetime Achievement Award is given to physicians who have made a lasting and significant impact on the field of maternal-fetal medicine. Dr Lockwood is internationally known for his research expertise in obstetrics and gynecology and has been credited with leading a research team that discovered fetal fibronectin, the first biochemical predictor of prematurity. He has also made major discoveries in the field of endometrial biology.

Author of 290 peer-reviewed publications and 170 editorials, Dr Lockwood has written or co-written three books and co-edited 7 major textbooks. He is also the obstetrics section editor for UpToDate and the president-elect of the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society. A member of the Sigma Xi and Alpha Omega Alpha honor societies, Dr Lockwood was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the National Academy of Medicine (Institute of Medicine.

“Dr Lockwood has accomplished so much, helped so many in our field and earned the respect of fellow researchers and physicians while making a huge contribution to the lives of expecting families and their babies,” Dr Norton said in presenting the award. “One of his greatest strengths is in teaching and mentoring-both of which he has done to a remarkable degree. He has mentored a large number of Ob/Gyn and MFM physicians, many of whom have risen to leadership roles.”
