On Friday, US President Joe Biden signed an executive order protecting nationwide access to contraception and abortion.

This decision come amid the recent Supreme Court ruling on Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health Organization, which overturned previous abortion precedent Roe v Wade. That June ruling allowed for states to independently determine abortion rights.

Now, with this recent executive order, Biden will order the Health and Human Services (HHS) Department to help protect and expand medication abortion access, as well as guarantee access to contraception, family planning services, and emergency medical care.

In a press conference following the signing, Biden said, "It's outrageous. I don't care what your position is—it's outrageous and it's dangerous. That's why this executive order directs HHS to ensure all patients, including pregnant women and girls, experiencing prenancy loss get emergency care they need under federal law and the doctors have clear guidance on their own responsibilities and protections no matter what state they're in."
